Modest songwriter with loads of songs ready to arrange is forming a new band to play essentially indie rock pop music, but I expect everyone to be open and ready to try new things musically and visually. DRUMMER and BASSIST needed, creativity needed, INSTRUMENTS NOT NEEDED (yet). Drums available at the rehearsal space we use and I can provide my bass for you to use until we're performance-ready. Style/age doesn't matter, but would prefer people born before the 1990s and after the 1950s who don't still dress like they did in college (or high school- for flunkies).
1) Picture of me with my go-to guitar for writing a song. Would like to have a fun band that people have fun going to see. No brooding or angsty wailing. Fun. I love 1950s guitars for an authentic surf-rock or Duane Eddy twang.
2) The CDs I listened to while working in my art studio in 2011, not my favorites, but shows what kind of range I listen to, would prefer all band members to be quite eclectic as well.
3) This is my guitar for loud and fast, guitars from the 1970s are my favorite for that.
Must be intelligent, creative and have a sense of humour.
Would prefer band members who were also artists or designers.
No obsessives - if you are into one specific kind of music or style, don't answer this ad.
We don't want anyone who is into only one style.
For example, don't reply if you label yourself:
a Goth, Emo, Rocker, Indie Rocker, Rockabilly, Billy Rocker, folk musician, jazz musician, country musician, Rush or Yes freak, Deadhead, Floyd Pinko, Nu Waver, New Ager, Punk, Post Punk, Hardcore (punk/metal/techno/insdustrial...harcore _______), SOFTCORE ANYTHING, acid jazz musician, Funk Musician, Fusion Musician, if you're white with dreadlocks, have ever worked at Guitar Center, have a celtic armband tattoo, wear lobe-stretching bone or ebony earplugs in combination with pointy sideburns and/or a goatee, have a fauxhawk, have a brohawk, use "AXE" toiletry products, earnestly consider yourself to be handsome or dashing, if you call yourself a "hipster", if you have white sunglasses, consider yourself Nu Rave, electro, techno, Detrechno, if you have eyeglasses with clear lenses in them but do not need corrective lenses (attitude glasses) or are just a douche in any way --- then we do not want you...
If you are into any ONE thing, ONE type of music, style, genre, etc. that's bad.
If you are into any combination of several things at the same time and are also a talented drummer or bassist (even if you don't have drums or a bass at the moment) then we want you.
(unless you use the word "literally" during small talk, then get lost.)
Also, even though we want a bass player and drummer, we will need some harmonies for some of the songs. So if either of you can sing, then that is wonderfully awesome, but not necessary. I just need musicians who can hold a tight track together and ride the wave of their own funkytime byproduct into a frenzy./sweat/trance-like-state. Finding the singer is a separate issue. THe band comes first. I pay for rehearsal space so if you don't have a drum kit, but have amazing funk and rhythm that's cool. I have a kickass short scale bass as well. SO even if you're broke but can play, let's go. I have a few dozen songs we will collaborate on and record at RoughMagic Studios (in the old Pencil Factory) and locally. REHEARSING AND RECORDING ONLY for the next few months - might do opening acts locally when we have a good fit with the band members and are confident & ready. Genre defying pop music with interesting bits. Dressing, looks important to set mood ON STAGE, but if you suck at dressing yourself in the daytime, we'll help. No need for sunglasses indoors, etc. May get into props, gimmicks and costumes for stage shows, be willing to wear a unitard and navigate fog machine exhaust carrying yuor shit and wearing funny costume shoes. INFLUENCES? angsty-pop/Arthur Lee & Love/Black Sabbath/Hendrix/Can/Faust/My Bloody Valentine/King Crimson/Pixies/No Age/Surf Rock/Kraut ROck/ SPace ROck/Nick Drake/Deerhunter/Time and Space Machine/Hawkwind/Battles/Bowie/Beatles/Lee Hazelwood/Black Lips/Slade/Yellowman/Eliot SMith/KISS/Mighty Boosh/early Fugazi/D.C. Hardcore/LIverpool&Manchester 80-90s pop/Pavement. Any of that and more is good. Want stage show to be like KISS meets Pink FLoyd, while playing catchy pop. Don't be afraid to like naf pop, yet also be able to sink your teeth into more complex and difficult music. DOn't take yourself or your music too seriously, yet still ahve your own sense of personal style and awareness of self.
However, no scene vultures or thrift store bachelors who think they know everything because they used wikipedia and google to investigate obscure music from the past.
The internet has bred a generation of halfwits whose knowledge is based entirely upon the limited opinions of others. I expect some humility and respect of what has come before us and all other styles (again, I can't stand people who zero in on one thing and dismiss the rest). I do prefer live, analog noise with electric amplification, although I am open to mixing in samples or loops or synths or even drum machines if it sounds right, I'm just not interested in predictable 4/4 builds with fade ins of enveloped square waves, or any other easy to emulate genre. I want unique individuals making interesting sunds into futuristic pop music. If you want to sound like anyone else, don't contact us. If you made it all the way to here without skipping anything, I am damned glad and interested to meet you and get jamming.
If you're interested, I'd love to hear from you.
