Dear Friends,
Ostacio Rosario came to New York in 1967. He comes from a humble family in Puerto Rico, of Sicilian descent. He worked as a dishwasher for a year before landing a great job at Wyckoff Heights hospital in Bushwick Brooklyn. He quickly made a lot of friends and soon started hanging out with two brothers, Oscar and Desi who introduced him to their sister Minerva. Ostacio and Minerva started a romance in 1969, and on August 1972 gave birth to their first son. Their family continued to grow, adding two more biological sons. In 1984, Ostacio adopted three boys after their father went to prison. With a family of two adults and six children, Ostacio found himself working longer hours, double shifts, an extra job and doing handy work on the side. Through all this, he never collected unemployment, never collected welfare or food stamps, never stole, never begged and never disgraced his family. With such a large family, it was amazing that a man with a THIRD grade education was able to provide them with a large apartment, food on the table and shoes on their feet. There were no luxuries, but every Sunday was a feast day for the family. Dinner time was sacred, and the Rosarios were one! Ostacio Rosario was never a celebrity, nor was he a politician, nor was he a huge public figure. Ostacio Rosario is greater than those labels. He is a family man who raised six boys into manhood, and made sure that they became productive, law abiding members of our society. His four letter word is Jail, and it is one word that he didn't want to ever see become a part of his sons' reality. He taught his boys to work, and as men they work and provide for their own children now.
That's a brief history of a great man who flew under the radar but was a real hero to his family, to his six sons, to his community and to life.
Today this once strong and proud man is home battling prostate cancer. He has given up all his savings, and his sons have depleted most of their savings because the great country for which he worked and struggled his whole life is now refusing to give him help in the most basic way. He has medicare, and has insurance, but these do not cover certain medications that he needs to fight this horrible cancer. His sons have all come together, put their own bills aside and paid his expensive treatments. Their out of pocket costs are $3125 a month, without taking into consideration the fact that there are bills piling up from when Mr. Rosario was hospitalized.
